Roncesvalles, Toronto
Roncesvalles is a neighbourhood in the city of Toronto, in the province of Ontario, Canada. Culturally, the region is known as the heart of the Polish population in Toronto, as seen by the presence of significant Polish institutions, companies, and the Catholic Church of St Casimir. The companies have banded together to form the Roncesvalles Village Business Improvement Area, which annually hosts the largest Polish Festival in North America, the Roncesvalles Polish Festival.
Roncesvalles is primarily a residential neighborhood with a commercial strip that is primarily comprised of small businesses, churches, and other institutions. The area to the west is entirely residential, with the exception of St. Joseph’s Health Centre and a streetcar barn operated by the Toronto Transit Commission. On the eastern side of the city, there is an older industrial district that is undergoing transformation.
Sorauren Park is a collection of buildings in Roncesvalles that have been transformed. On Wabash Avenue, there are two other historic industrial buildings that are owned by the City of Toronto and are intended for conversion into a community center in the future. One of the structures is being used as a clubhouse for the Park’s members.
It has a long and illustrious history of political and community activity in Roncesvalles, which is reflected in its name. There are a number of well-established community organizations that are still operational. North of Bloor Street, the High Park Resident’s Association represents the neighborhood, while the Sunnyside Community Association represents the remaining avenues in the southern portion of the city.
The iconic repertory movie theater Revue Cinema, which is located at the crossroads of Roncesvalles and Queen Street, first opened its doors in 1911. Because of the dissolution of the Festive Cinemas chain in 2005, it was forced to close for a year. It was then rebuilt as a non-profit enterprise by the Revue Film Society. The group worked tirelessly for a year to find a means to bring the Revue back to life, and eventually formed a partnership with a local couple who acquired the theater and now leases it to the society.
There are various clubs and restaurants in the vicinity that feature live music. The one-day Roncy Rocks music and art festival, which takes place along Roncesvalles Avenue every year, attracts thousands of people. The majority of the musicians and artists come from the surrounding area. The Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto Canada relocated to a new location in the former Tower Building in the fall of 2018. Apart from that, there are a number of independent art galleries in the vicinity of Sorauren Avenue and Roncesvalles.
